Rug tradition in Crevillente, with centuries of history

Before the industrial peak of the rug in Crevillente, handcrafted rugs were made in this city long before the mechanical looms arrived. For centuries, there was talk of straw and reed mats, which were handcrafted, in what is known as the beginning of this tradition, which was gradually industrialised with handlooms and later mechanical ones.
Today, Crevillente is the main exporter of rugs and carpets in Spain, a position it has held since the 80s and 90s when 90 per cent of Spanish production came from this town in Alicante.
